Broadway, Park Row Intersection - about 1860
Traffic of carts, horse-drawn streetcars and pedestrians on Broadway, intersection of Park Row (to the right), looking toward City Hall Park. Photograph by the American Studio, about 1860. Source: Photographic views from the collections of the New York Public Library.
An old utility pole is in the foreground. The cityscape became ugly with the amount of wires by the 1880s and the overhead wires were buried in the 1890s. The old Post Office building was constructed on the southern side of City Hall Park, seen on top, in 1869. It was demolished in 1939.
