Statue of Liberty Torch, Madison Square - about 1882

Looking up Fifth Avenue from old gas lamp post at 24th Street. Worth Monument, dedicated in 1857, is on the left and Worth House, is behind the monument. Madison Square is on the right, with the Statue of Liberty torch. The Marble Collegiate Church is in the distance on 5th Avenue at 29th St. and the spire of Brick Church is further away at 37th Street. Photograph by Brown Brothers (New York, N.Y.), about 1882, from the photographic views of New York City from the collections of the New York Public Library.

The Statue of Liberty's torch was on display on the northwest of Madison Square from 1877 to 1882, during the campaign to raise funds for the base of the statue. For 50 cents, sightseers could go inside and climb a ladder to the flame. The Statue, designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was dedicated on October 28, 1886.
