Midtown Manhattan - 1932

Midtown Manhattan

Aerial photograph of Midtown Manhattan by photographer Hamilton M. Wright (Aerial Explorations, Inc., N.Y.), during construction of Rockefeller Center, 1932. It also shows Chrysler Building, St. Patrick's Cathedral and many other buildings.

News agency caption: New York: The largest private undertaking in all history. The $250,000,000 Rockefeller Center Development as it appears today in uptown New York where more than 56,000 are employed in all phases of its development. The skyscraper structure in the center is the RCA building, largest office building in the world to rise 70 stories. At the left is the RKO building - and adjoining it the International Music Hall, largest theatre in the world - at the extreme right is the RKO Sound Theatre. Directly in back (East) of the RCA building is the excavation for the British Empire Building and La Maison Francaise. More than six acres of landscaping will decorate the roofs and set backs of this development rivaling in beauty the Gardens of Babylon.
