The building that houses the Patterson Brothers' store of hardware and Cutlery was erected about 1850 at 21-29 Park Row, owned by John Jacob Astor. Henry, Edgar and William Patterson established the business in 1848 in a store on the Bowery and moved to 27 Park Row in 1858. The store moved to 15 Park Row, in the ground floor of Park Row Building, in 1938 and closed in 1959.
City Hall Park is to the right. St. Paul's Chapel and the Astor House are represented in the distance, on Broadway. The old Lovejoy's Hotel, at 34 Park Row, is on the extreme left, on the southeast corner of Beekman Street. This hotel closed in 1870 and the building was occupied by the Evening Mail.
