Times Square about 1962
This is Times Square, looking south on the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, in the early 1960s. Date based on events advertised in billboards, buildings and car models. Source: Vintage postcard from Columbia University Libraries.
The Times Building, seen in the center, was erected in 1904 and in 1963-1964, changing its external design. The epic El Cid, announced in the theater on the right, was released on December 14, 1961, in the United States. The old Hotel Astor, on the right, between 44th Street and 45th Street, was demolished in 1967 to make way for the Minskoff Building. The 33-story Paramount Building was completed in 1926 at 1501 Broadway (behind Hotel Astor). The old Loew's State Theatre is on the left at 1540 Broadway. It opened in 1921 and closed in 1987.
