Domestic Sewing Machine Company Building, Union Square - 1870s
The Domestic Sewing Machine Company was formed in 1864. Its eight-story General Offices building on Broadway and 14th Street, facing Union Square, was completed in 1873. The company was declared bankrupt in 1895. The building was demolished about 1928 to make way for a 20-story office building.
Offices of the Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machines are on the right. This company was founded in 1853 and, in 1905, the Singer Corporation took over the company.
