He was the head of the NYPL Art Department, and served as Curator of Prints from 1921 until his retirement in 1942.
According to the New York Times (July 19, 1981), this lithograph, dated 1860, shows Issac A. Van Amburgh, a native of Dutchess County at the peak of fame. He was known as the ''greatest lion tamer in the world". He was traveling in an elaborately carved wagon drawn by 10 white horses.
The Washington Monument, dedicated in 1856, and Everett House, which opened in 1853, are in the center.
