Union Square Park - 1928

Union Square Park from Abraham Lincoln Monument at University Place and West 14th Street (southwest corner of Union Square), looking toward the Guardian Life Insurance Building, on the northeast corner of East 17th Street and Forth Avenue. Photograph dated January 11, 1928 from the New York Edison Company Collection, New York Public Library.

Soon after this photo was taken the park was excavated for the subway and mostly destroyed. The park was renovated by 1930 and the Lincoln Monument was relocated to the north end of Union Square Park.

The 16-story Everett Building, completed in 1908 on the corner of Fourth Avenue (now Park Avenue South), was built on the site of the old Everett House, opened in 1853. The Union Square Savings Bank is on the northeast corner of 15th Street.
