The 12-story Tontine Building - 1902

This was the third Tontine Building erected on this same site. The Tontine Coffee House, was completed here in 1793 and was renamed Tontine Building in 1834. Another Tontine Building was constructed in 1855 and demolished to make way for this early skyscraper.

The original Tontine Association, however was closed after its assets was sold by auction in 1881.
This Tontine Building was enlarged after 1904, taking the whole block front on Wall Street, from Pearl St. to Water St. It was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Today it houses the Wall Street Hotel at 88 Wall Street.
