Chatwal Hotel
The Chatwal New York, originally the Lambs Club Building, is a hotel located at 130 West 44th Street, near Times Square, in Midtown Manhattan. The building, completed in 1905, was designated a New York City landmark in 1974 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Lambs Club was founded in 1874 by a small group, which included members of the Wallack Theatre Company, for "the social intercourse of members of the dramatic and musical professions with men of the world, and the giving of entertainments for mutual amusement and instruction." Henry J. Montague [1843-1878], one of the founders, had belonged to a similar club in London, with the same name in honor of Charles and Mary Lamb, who had held weekly open house for theatre people, and suggested the name for the New York group. The club was formally incorporated under New York State law on May 10, 1877.
The building on West 44th Street was originally six stories
high and was developed in two phases as the headquarters of the Lambs, a
theatrical social club. The original wing at 128–130 West 44th Street was
designed by Stanford White of the firm McKim, Mead & White. The annex at
132 West 44th Street was designed in 1915 by George Freeman. The ground floor is
faced with smooth marble surmounted by an attractive bandcourse containing a
Greek fret motif. Identical
doorways with Doric columns support full entablatures and accent the two
entrances. The third floor included a library and a main assembly room. The
third and fourth stories also contained the Edwin Burke Memorial Theatre, later
Lamb's Theatre.
In 1975, and the Church of the Nazarene bought the clubhouse after it experienced financial difficulties and sold at auction. The church sold the building in 2006 to Hampshire Hotels, operated by the family of Vikram Chatwal. The current design of the building dates to a renovation between 2007 and 2010, designed by Thierry Despont. The hotel and the Lambs Club restaurant opened in 2010, and the hotel became part of Starwood's Luxury Collection.
Near the Chatwall there are the AKA Times Square, at 123 W 44th St., the Aura Hotel Times Square, the historic Belasco Theatre (originally the Stuyvesant Theatre) and the Hudson Theatre, at 141 W 44th St.
