Cort Theatre, West 48th Street - 1938
The Cort Theatre, now James Earl Jones Theatre, located at 138 West 48th Street, between 7th Avenue and 6th Avenue, in New York City. The theater is showing the play Room Service, which debuted at the Cort Theatre on May 19, 1937 and closed on July 16, 1938, after 500 performances. It was written by Allen Boretz (1900–1985) and John Murray and originally produced by George Francis Abbott (1887-1995). The old Hotel Flanders is on the left.
Cort Theatre was built in 1912 for impresario and producer John Cort (ca. 1861-1929). It was designed in neoclassical style by architect Thomas W. Lamb (1870-1942). Today it is operated by the Shubert Organization. Both the façade and interior of the theater were designated New York City landmarks in 1987.
The Shubert Organization purchased the theater in 1927. Though the theater was used as a television studio for The Merv Griffin Show from 1969 to 1972, it has mostly remained in theatrical use through the years.
