Construction of Brooklyn Bridge began in 1870 and opened to traffic in 1883. This suspension bridge over the East River was designed by John A. Roebling, a German-born U.S. civil engineer, pioneer in the design of suspension bridges. Brooklyn Bridge connects Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan.
The Tribune Building at Printing House Square is on the left. It was one of the early skyscrapers in New York City, completed in 1875. The Ferry from the old Roosevelt Street is on the right.
