Market Slip, New York City - 1859
View of Market Slip, in 1859, taken from the corner of Cherry Street, looking towards the East River. Illustration for The Manual of the Corporation for the City of New York - 1860, published by David Thomas Valentine (1801-1869) (lithograph, originally not colorized).
By the mid-19th century, the City of New York had become the busiest port on the East coast of the United States due to increased access to interior trade routes up the Hudson River via the Erie Canal, opened in 1825.
