Commercial Buildings on Broadway, North from Houston St. - 1884
Commercial loft buildings on east side Broadway, horse drawn streetcars, pedestrians and overhead wires, looking north from Houston Street, dated 1884 (according to the New York Public Library). Rails are being laid on the street. The Grace Church, on the corner of East 10th Street, consecrated in 1846, is in the distance. The overhead wires were buried after the Great Blizzard of 1888.
The six-story building on the northeast corner of Houston Street (610 to 618 Broadway) was erected in 1882 or before. It was the former home of the Bronner & Co. Retail Clothiers and the building was owned by Levy Brothers & Co. at 472 Broadway, which went bankrupt in September 1883. It continued to house clothing stores in the late 19th century. The site is now occupied by the 610 Broadway, completed in 2004, headquarters of the Anchorage Capital Group. The adjoining 6-story building at 620 Broadway was owned by Henry Dolan and still exists.
