Businesses along Broadway, New York - 1897
Broadway, New York City, looking north from about Walker Street (the four-story building at 400 Broadway, corner of Walker St. is on the right). Stereograph showing traffic and several businesses along busy downtown street crowded, with pedestrians, several streetcars, and horse and carts. On verso: "This is undoubtedly the greatest commercial thoroughfare in America. It extends from Bowling Green to Central Park a distance of five miles, beyond which it is called the Boulevard". Published by Keystone View Co., 1897. Source: Library of Congress.
During this period, residents were rapidly moving northward on the Island of Manhattan. The Grace Church, on the corner of East 10th Street, consecrated in 1846, is seen in the distance.
