Broadway at Spring Street about 1860

Published by E. Anthony, 501 Broadway (a building to the left, outside this photo). Photo taken about 1860. The Anthony company was one of the largest publishers of stereoscopic views in the world and one of the earliest. Edward Antony began publishing his stereoviews in 1859, working with his brother Henry Anthony. Source of the photo: Stereoscopic views, New York Public Library.

The six-story St. Nicholas Hotel, on the left, opened in January 1853 as a luxury hotel and it was fully completed in March, 1854. The Prescott House at 529 Broadway, is on the northwest corner of Spring Street. It was named after the historian William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859).
