Bridges over East River - circa 1909
Vintage photo, original title: Looking east from the Singer Tower, New York, N.Y. Published by Detroit Publishing Co. circa 1909. Source: Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division.
Three bridges over East River are shown: Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, Manhattan Bridge, completed in 1909, and Williamsburg Bridge, completed in 1903, in the distance. Despite its name, the East River is actually a saltwater tidal strait, which connects Upper New York Bay on its south end to Long Island Sound on its north end.
