Illustration shows pedestrians, trolley cars, and horse-drawn carriages advancing the span from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The Tribune Building, opened in 1875, is in the foreground. The Sun is next to it. The French's Hotel opened in 1849 on Park Row, corner of Frankfort Street. It was demolished in 1888 to make way for the World Building, completed in 1890.
The Brooklyn Bridge, over the East River, opened to traffic on May 24, 1883. It was designed by German-born engineer John Augustus Roebling (1806-1869).
