New York City Hall - 1850
Illustration shows the old bell structure which was rung in case of fire alarm, built in the late 1840s and destroyed in 1858 by fire. The City Hall building is a national historic landmark, designated in 1960.
In the late 18th century, this area was known as the Fields or the Common. At the time, a few government buildings were located here, like the Alms House, the Bridewell and the barracks. By mid-19th century, several publishing houses had moved to Park Row, on the east side of City Hall Park. The area also included some hotels and the New York Theatre, completed in 1798.
