New York City Hall Building - 1851

The City Hall, looking northeast from the Broadway side. Illustration drawn and engraved by H. Winkles, published by John Tallis & Co., London & New York as an inset from the Plan of New York by J. Rapkin. Source: Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps Inc.

This City Hall building was designed by John McComb Jr. and Joseph Mangin and opened in 1812. The old City Hall on Wall Street was demolished in the same year.

Illustration shows the old bell structure, on top of the roof, which was rung in case of fire. This bell structure was destroyed in 1858, when a fire destroyed the City Hall roof. Pictorial analysis shows this bell from 1848 (not before 1846) to 1858. Later, the bell system for fire alarm was replaced by street boxes and telegraphs.
