At the time, this section of Fifth Avenue was mostly a residential area. Saint Thomas Church is on the northwest corner of West 53rd Street (left). The Gothic tower of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church is further north at 708 5th Avenue, corner of 55th Street. Its construction began in 1875.  The Hotel Netherland and Hotel Savoy are in the distance, on the right, on the corner of East 59th Street.
