The New York Public Library (NYPL) is a public library system in New York City, with nearly 53 million items and 92 locations. It is a private, nonprofit corporation, operating with both private and public financing. The Library at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street, is the flagship building in the NYPL system.
Construction of this NYPL building began in 1900, on the site of the old Croton Reservoir. The Library opened on May 23, 1911. A renovation of the building was announced in 2007.
