Broadway & 5th Avenue, Intersection at Madison Square - about 1885
New York City in the 19th century, about 1884, looking south from 23rd Street. Photo taken from the Fifth Avenue Hotel. This is the intersection of Broadway (left) and Fifth Avenue. The old "Flatiron block", before Flatiron Building, is in the center.
The Hotel Bartholdi (corner of 23rd Street) is on the extreme left (small part). The building was completed in 1885. The Cumberland House (with advertising of Benson's Capcine porous plaster on the rear wall), old St. Germain Hotel (175 Fifth Avenue), is at 22nd Street. It was renovated and expanded by 1880. The utility poles and overhead wires were removed by 1890.
