City Hotel on Broadway - late 18th Century

Broadway, looking south from near Liberty Street, probably in the late 18th Century. Engraved in aquatint by Charles Frederick William Mielatz (1860-1919). Published by the Society of Iconophiles, N.Y. Copyright 1905. Title: City Hotel, Broadway, between Thames and Cedar Streets.

The old City Hotel opened in 1795 as Tontine Hotel and closed in 1849. The cityscape shows an unpaved Broadway. In 1793, the Common Council ratified assessments for the paving of Great George Street (now Broadway) from Vesey Street to Murray Street. It was paved with stones in 1799 or before. The second temple of Trinity Church is in the distance. It was built from 1788 to 1790 and demolished in 1839 due to structural problems.
