The Art Deco New Yorker opened in 1930. It was designed by Sugarman and Berger Architects. Its façade is made of brick and terracotta, with Indiana limestone on the lower stories.
The hotel hosted influential politicians, celebrities and sports figures. The orchestras played in the Terrace Restaurant. Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Woody Herman and Bob Crosby all played here. The concerts were broadcast four nights a week by CBS radio.
The New Yorker closed its doors in 1972 and reopened in 1994. Since 2014, it is managed by the Wyndham Hotels & Resorts.
