Mural by Louis Jambor at New Yorker Hotel
Mezzanine lobby of the Hotel New Yorker in the 1930s, showing a mural by artist Louis Jambor. The Art Deco Hotel New Yorker opened in 1930 at 481 Eighth Avenue, between West 34th Street and W 35th Atreet, Midtown Manhattan. The hotel was designed by Sugarman and Berger Architects and the interior was decorated with 26 murals by Louis Jámbor. The hotel was closed in 1972 and reopened in 1994.
Lajos "Louis" Jámbor (1884-1954) was a Hungarian-US post-impressionist painter, illustrator, muralist and background artist for animation. He attended the Hungarian Royal National School of Arts in Budapest. After graduation he studied religious art in Italy and studied in Düsseldorf, Germany under Frank Gebhard. Jámbor was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts before emigrating to the United States in 1923. Jámbor was the president of the American Artists Professional League (AAPL) at the time of his death in 1954.
