Hotels on Broadway, Worth Square - about 1890
Hotels on west side Broadway, north from 24th to 26th streets. Photo by Brown Brothers (New York, N.Y.), taken about 1890. Utility poles could be seen in this area before this year. This is the junction of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Source: Photographic views of New York City from the collections of the New York Public Library.
The Albemarle Hotel, completed in 1860, is on the left, on the northwest corner of 24th Street. It closed by 1915. The building adjoining the Albemarle and the corner building on the southwest corner of 25th Street together constituted the Hoffman House. The St. James Hotel, built in 1857 and demolished in 1896, is on the southwest corner of 26th Street. The Worth House and the Worth Monument, dedicated in 1857, are at the extreme right. Madison Square Park is behind the photographer.
