Worth Monument - about 1870
Original title: The Worth Monument, New York City [Photographed by Rockwood, 839 Broadway]. text on print: «New York is noticeably deficient in its monuments ; there are not more than a dozen statues or other memorial works of art in the city, and few of those are of special value. Among the most interesting is the Worth Monument, which we illustrate on this page, and which is located at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue, in front of Madison Square. It was erected several years since to the memory of General William Jenkins Worth, a distinguished officer during the war of 1812, and one of the heroes of the Mexican war, winning great distinction at Monterey and Molino del Rey. His remains lie beneath the monument erected in his honor.» Source: Booth's History of New York, NYPL.
The landscape was depicted about 1870, looking toward Madison Square Park from Broadway. The Worth House is to the left. Worth Monument was dedicated in 1857.
