Trinity Place - 1861
The Trinity Place, Manhattan, looking south from near Thames Street. The Gothic temple of Trinity Church and its churchyard are on the left. On the right, buildings on the west side of Trinity Pl. Lithograph of Sarony, Major & Knapp for the D.T. Valentine's Manual, 1862. Original title: Trinity Place Behind Trinity Church - 1861.
This was the former Lumber Street, which was laid out after the city wall was removed in the late 17th century.
A Trinity charity school was erected by 1800, on the west side by 1800, near Rector Street. It became a public school by the mid 19th century. In 1884, the old American Bank Note Company building was completed at 70 Broad Street, replacing some of the buildings on the right. It adjoined the old Trinity School erected in 1871 on the corner of Thames Street.
