William Street from Wall Street - 1837

William Street is one of the oldest streets in Manhattan. It was represented in the 1660 Castello Plan of New Amsterdam. Originally called King Street, it was renamed after Willem Beekman who arrived in New Amsterdam in 1647 as a fellow passenger of Peter Stuyvesant.

This is a fragment of an engraving, copyrighted 1837, showing the William Street from Wall Street, looking south. The main subject of this illustration is a prospective view of the Merchants' Exchange building, here partially represented on the left, corner of Wall Street.
