Map of Times Square - 1904
This is a map of Times Square published by the New York Times in the following day the name was changed from Long Acre Square by a mayor's resolution on April 8, 1904.
The map shows the first line of the New York subway and its Times Station, which was under construction and opened a few months later on October 27. Times Building was also under construction and it was completed late, in the same year. The old Pabst Hotel was demolished to make way for the Times Building.
Hotel Astor, between 44th and 45th streets, opened in September, 1904.
During the first year of operation, Times Square Station contributed five million passengers to the volume of subway travel in New York City. The area had become an important theater, hotel and publishing center.
