George Washington Monument - about 1856

By 1930 the Washington Monument was removed to the southern part of the park. The equestrian statue, on a granite pedestal, was sculpted by Henry Kirke Brown (1814-1886). This was this first public monument erected in New York City. Worth Monument was the second.
