State Street is a short street in the southern Manhattan tip. It runs west from Whitehall Street as a continuation of Water Street, then turns north at Battery Park to become its eastern border. In the 18th century, it was known as Copsey Street after the old Native American village, which had been located nearby. In the 1790s, it was renamed after the Government House or State House, built on the site of the buildings shown above. Today, this site is occupied by the Alexander Hamilton US Custom House, erected from 1902 and 1907.
