Bowling Green, Southern Manhattan - 1869

Bowling Green, looking south, probably from a balloon. Photo by Brown Brothers, 1869. Source: Photographic views of New York City, from the collections of the New York Public Library.

Photograph shows part of the southern tip of Manhattan, with Bowling Green and Broadway in the foreground. Whitehall Street is on the left, Battery Park is partly seen, the Upper New York Bay is in the background and Governors Island is in the distance.

The old "Bowling Green Row", with five 4 1/2-story buildings, is in the south side of Bowling Green. These buildings were demolished in 1900 to make way for the U.S. Custom House, completed in 1907.
