In the background we can see the old "Bowling Green Row", where most of the structures on the site were 4 1/2-story buildings. Demolition of these buildings began in February, 1900, and the site was cleared by July. The U.S. Custom House was constructed on the place between 1901 and 1907.
The old Washington Hotel (1 Broadway) in on the right, on the corner of Battery Place. It was replaced by the Washington Building, opened in 1884.
