Bowling Green NYC - about 1899
View of the beginning of Broadway, south from Morris Street. Bowling Green, New York's first park, is in the center. Undated, unidentified photographer. Photo can be dated from 1898 to February 1890. Source: Photographic views of New York City, from the collections of the New York Public Library.
In the background we can see the old "Bowling Green Row", where most of the structures on the site were three-story buildings. Demolition of these buildings on the site began in February, 1900, and the site was cleared by July. The U.S. Custom House was constructed on the place between 1901 and 1907.
The Welles Building at 14-20 Broadway, on the left, was erected about 1882. The Produce Exchange, completed in 1883, is on the southeast corner of Beaver Street, on the left. Part of the Washington Building (One Broadway), opened in 1884, can be seen on the right and, adjoining it, the Bowling Green Offices Building, completed in 1898. Part of the façade of the old Stevens House can be seen at the extreme right. Street cars and their electrified tracks can also be seen.
