Midtown Manhattan - 1951

Aerial photo of Midtown Manhattan dated July 24 1951. Source: New York State Archives. The series of low-altitude, oblique aerial views of a variety of New York State sites was produced by the New York office of Fairchild Aerial Surveys during the years 1946-1949, 1951, and 1957. This firm's work was used to produce maps for the U.S. Geological Survey, among others.

Photograph shows the old Pennsylvania RR Station on the left at West 33rd Street. It was completed in 1910. Its above-ground portions were demolished in 1963 for the construction of the Madison Square Garden, completed in 1968. The Empire State Building and Chrysler Building are also visible. The junction of Broadway and 5th Avenue at Madison Square is seen in the bottom left.
