Castle Garden, Battery Park - about the 1870s
Original title: Castle Garden Landing for Emigrants, Barge Office, Battery. Published by Charles Magnus, late 19th Century. Source: 100 Views of New York and Environs, Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Pictorial analysis shows that the landfill in the foreground was constructed after 1873 and a large structure stood on the site before 1883. From 1855 to 1890, Castle Garden served as the New York State immigration station, then it moved to Ellis Island. Governors Island is represented on the right.
