Central Park Lake, Balcony Bridge and Oak Bridge - 1861
A view of New York's Central Park published in the Manual of the Corporation of the city of New York (Common Council), the Valentine's Manual, in 1861.
Lithograph with tint stone, drawn by George Hayward. Publisher: David Thomas Valentine (1801–1869).
The Balcony Bridge is located on the west side of the Lake and named for its two small balcony-like benches inset into its railing. The picturesque 20-acre lake was once a large swamp. From 1858 to 1950, the Lake was used for ice skating during the winter months and boating in the summer. Now it is a place for bird watching, where one can spot swans, ducks, and other birds.
