Old Brick Church Demolition - 1857

The Old Brick Church on Beekman Street / Park Row was demolished from March 14 to about late April 1857.  The Brick Presbyterian Church moved to a new temple in Fifth Avenue in 1858.

This illustration was published in Harper's Weekly on May 9, 1857 in an article entitled The Old Brick Church And Its Pastor (Gardiner Spring). It shows the Old Brick Church, as seen from Park Row, in the demolition process. According to this article, "a sketch of the venerable pile, as it appeared a few days after the work of demolition had been commenced".

The six-story New-York Daily Times Building, at 138 Nassau Street, is behind the church. In 1857, the newspaper was renamed The New York Times and bought northern part of the church's site to build its new headquarters. The part facing Beekman Street was occupied by the Park Building, later World Building.
