Broadway from Herald Square - 1907

 

This is a fragment of a larger photo of the Macy's Department Store (left), showing the part of Broadway, looking north from the from the Sixth Avenue's elevated railway at Herald Square.

The old Herald Building and its group of sculptures on top, is on the right. Times Building, completed in 1904, in the distance. The Hotel Marlborough, Broadway and 36th Street (center), opened in the late 1880s and was demolished in 1923.

The Herald Square Theater is on the northwest corner of West 35th Street, at 1331 Broadway, where the New York Aquarium formerly stood. It opened in 1883 as the New Park Theatre. In 1911, it was partially destroyed by fire, rebuilt and converted into a silent movie house. It closed in 1914.
