Dakota Apartments 1965
The Dakota Apartments at 1 West 72nd Street, seen from Central Park West, New York County, NY, in 1965. The Dakota was the City's first luxury apartment house and it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. This impressive structure of eight stories with attic was designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh, who later de signed the Plaza Hotel. The principal elevations have three horizontal divisions: the base, consisting of two stories and basement, the shaft of four floors, and the crown, or roof with its multiplicity of gables and dormers. Majestic Apartments is to the left.
