Illustration depicts Broadway between 1880, when the Metropolitan Concert Hall opened on the southwest corner of 41st Street (center of the image) and 1887 when the Broadway Theatre was under construction in the same site. It was based on the photograph below.
On the left, is the old St. Cloud Hotel, which opened in 1868. It was demolished about 1904 to make way for the Knickerbocker Hotel. The building on the right, corner of 42nd Street became later part of the Metropole Building.
The Times Building was erected in 1904, on the northern side of 42nd Street, between Broadway and 7th Avenue. The site is not seen in this image.
This photo, from the collection of the New York Historical Society, served as the model for the illustration above.
