Fraunces Tavern in Lower Manhattan - 1850

This is a fragment of the illustration drawn from nature by John Bachmann, original title Bird's Eye View of New York and Brooklyn. Here, it is shown the part with the historic Fraunces Tavern indicated and the Docks, with additional text. The old tavern was drawn here as a sketch with its main features before the fire that destroyed much of the building in June 1852. This sketch is enough the show a building three stories high plus an attic and the design of the roof, similar to the one restored in 1906/1907.

John Bachmann (1814-1896) was born in Switzerland and arrived in New York City in 1848. He was known as a fine artist who was very careful with his illustrations, revealing a high level of competence. Below, a lithograph, printed in color, of the same drawing, copyright 1850.
