Worth Square, Fifth Avenue and Broadway - about 1896
Worth Square, a triangular square bounded by Fifth Avenue (right), Broadway and West 25th Street seen from Madison Square Park, above 23rd Street. Photograph was taken in 1896 (or before) when the St. James Hotel seen on Broadway and 26th Street was demolished.
Madison Square Park, was created in 1847. Worth Square has served as a burial site and memorial to General William Jenkins Worth (1794-1849). The old Fifth Avenue Hotel, on the left, opened in 1859. The Albemarle Hotel and Hoffman House are seen between West 24th and West 25th streets. The old Worth House at 1 West 25th St., facing Worth Square, opened in 1865.
