Old Plaza at Scholar's Gate, Central Park - Before 1894
Northern section of the Old Plaza (current Grand Army Plaza), part of the Scholar's Gate, looking northeast from 59th Street. Central Park is to the left. Photograph taken by Brown Brothers before 1894, when the Metropolitan Club was erected and not seen in this picture. The seven-story building to the right (785 / 784 5th Ave) was next to Hotel Netherland, completed in 1893. The General Sherman Monument was installed in this northern section of the Old Plaza in 1903 (photo from New York Public Library).
