The Lower Manhattan around 1905. Since the last decade of 19th century, skyscrapers have changed the Manhattan skyline. Some buildings were erected to be the tallest in the world. In 1890, the World Building was completed, then the tallest in New York. The Empire State Building, completed in 1931, was the biggest star in this race (illustration from an old postcard by Raphael Tuck & Sons).
