The Printing House Square is in the foreground with Benjamin Franklin Monument, unveiled in 1872. The New York Times Building, completed in 1858, is facing Spruce Street and the Square. The portico of St. Paul's Chapel is seen in the distance on Broadway. The Post Office is on the right. It was occupied in 1875, but continued to be under construction until 1880, due to structural problems. The Tribune Building, opened in 1875, is partially seen on the extreme left.
The old six-story Park Hotel building, on the northeast corner of Beekman and Nassau streets (seen on the left) was demolished in May 1878 and replaced by the Morse Building, completed in 1880. The building formerly housed the New-York Daily Times (later the New York Times), from 1854 to 1858.
