Potter Building on Park Row - about 1887
This is the second Potter Building on Park Row, northeast corner of Beekman Street, erected on the site of the old Brick Church, demolished in 1857. Undated photograph taken from the City Hall Park (to the left) by L. G. Strand, composition of stereoscopic views. Source: New York Public Library.
The first Potter Building was a 5-story structure erected by Orlando Brunson Potter (1823–1894) in 1857, adjoining the Time Building (seen here on the left). It was originally called Park Building and later World Building, which was destroyed by fire in 1882. Continue below...
This 11-story Potter Building was designed by Norris G. Starkweather and still stands today with addresses at 38 Park Row and 145 Nassau Street. It was built from 1883 to June 1886, designated a New York City landmark in 1996.
This photo can be dated between mid-1886, when Potter Building was completed and the early 1888, when the new 13-story Times Building was under construction. The Temple Court Building, erected in 1882 at 5 Beekman Street, is seen on the right. It is also a NYC landmark. Today, The Beekman Hotel.
