This historic building on the southeast corner of Park Row and Beekman St., originally four floors, housed the old Lovejoy's Hotel, established in the early 1830s. Two stories were added in the late 1840s. The hotel was closed by April, 1870 and the New York Evening Mail took over the building. In 1892, the Mail and Express Building, on Broadway and Fulton Street, was completed and the newspaper was removed to the new headquarters.
In 1915, when this photo was taken the building housed several offices, stores and the Ladies and Gents Café and Restaurant. In 2016, the six-story building at 1 Beekman Street was demolished to make way for a 23-story residential skyscraper at 33 Park Row, completed in 2021.
